RUN, WALK 'N WHEELATHONS
After years of persistent knocking at the doors of racetrack administrators and promoters, in 2009 Ida Cahill was successful in scheduling two “Run, Walk 'N Wheelathon” events, held in conjunction with Indycar race weekends. Proceeds of these fundraising events are earmarked for paralysis research, helping the almost six million people in the United States who have some form of paralysis. The local money raised is distributed to hospitals and research centers in the area.
Over 400 runners, walkers and wheelers joined the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and Shoot For A Cure Moto Sport at the first Run, Walk 'N Wheelathon in Toronto, Ontario Canada on July 9, 2009. Approximately $12,000 was raised while uniting various organizations, who together are working to find a cure for paralysis. The inaugural event was so well received that it was repeated at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California on August 20, 2009, again in cooperation with Shoot for a Cure Moto Sport. Participants were able to race on a modified version of the race course used by the IndyCar Series.
We started 2010 with a Run, Walk 'N Wheelathon event in conjunction with the Honda Grand Prix Indycar race in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 26, again in cooperation with Shoot for a Cure Moto Sport and welcoming the Challenged Athletes Foundation of Florida and the Embracing Florida's Wounded Heroes organization. Runners from local clubs, athletes, families and supporters were excited to sign up, because participants were able to follow the actual course to be used for the weekend's Indycar and Indy Lights races. The event was followed by an outdoor party including photo ops with race drivers and celebrities.
We expect to bring our Run, Walk 'N Wheelathons back to the Honda Indy (Toronto, Ontario Canada) in July, then on to Infineon Raceway (Sonoma, California) in August, and round out the year with a Run, Walk 'N Wheelathon event in Henderson, Nevada (near Las Vegas) in late October.

Everyone who runs, walks, wheels or just helps out at our Run, Walk 'N Wheelathons has a great time. Although undoubtedly labor-intensive, these events are successful in terms of fundraising as well as media exposure, and also provide positive PR for racetracks and racing promoters.
Now that we can show a “track record” (pardon the pun) of successful, safe events, we expect to expand the Run, Walk 'N Wheelathon program to more locations in the years to come. Our ultimate goal is to reach the day when racetrack administrators call Ida Cahill and ask, “Are you going to schedule a Run, Walk 'N Wheelathon event here this season?”
